Within New Zealand state housing is the system of public housing offered to citizens unable to afford private rents. State housing was introduced per Labour government in 1937. At that period rentals compared to some 1/3 of the worker's income.

A low of state houses to their resident was introduced inside 1952. The peak of 70,000 state rental houses was reached in the early 1990's. Inside 1991 a National government raised state home rentals to "market levels" amid great deal argument.
